Water tap challenges green cars as energy saver

2008-01-30

We all know that green cars reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide drastically. But did you know that the emission can be reduced just as much by switching to energy saving mixers in your kitchen and bathrooms? If you invest in an energy saving mixer for about 1000 EUR you can save up to 2 tons of carbon dioxide - the same amount as if you choose to drive a green car.

A report made by the Swedish Industrial Research and Development Corporation (IVF) shows that a larger household, that uses 5000 kWh energy per year for heating up water, can save almost 2 tons of carbon dioxide just by changing to Scandinavia's first energy saving water tap.

If you replace three taps in your home with new, energy saving ones, you can lower the energy used for water heating with almost 40 %. The investment you make by changing from ordinary single lever mixers will pay itself within less by three years through the electricity you save.

According to STEM (Swedish Energy Agency) one fifth of a household's energy is used for heating water. That figure is even higher for households living in apartments. If electricity is used for heating the water - which is not uncommon - it's reasonable to assume that the saved electricity is so called marginal electricity which, in the Nordic electricity market, is produced by coal. Almost 1 kg carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour electricity is emitted from coal condensation plants.

Small daily energy thieves have a big impact

It's proven that the small daily energy thieves give just as much impact as the big ones. IVF's research shows that you can do a lot for the environment just by changing taps in the home and the cost for this is 10 times lower than if you invest in a green car. The test results presuppose that the household installs Nautic from Gustavsberg; the first tap in Scandinavia with an energy saving technique.

-Water saving technique is standard among Scandinavian mixers today, but the energy saving technique is completely new. The technique is simple and easy; the lever has to be pushed to its extreme left position for the maximum temperature to be reached. If you release the lever it drifts back automatically to its regular position and gives water that is warm enough for washing the hands or doing the dishes, says Matti Weineland. Manager Quality and Environment for mixers at Villeroy & Boch Gustavsberg AB.

Surveys from the Swedish Energy Agency (STEM) reveal that the energy consumption decreases by 40 % with Nautic compared to the average for other mixers on the market.

Saving of carbon dioxide with different ways of heating

In the table below you see how much carbon dioxide you save by using different ways of heating water. The saving of costs varies much less.
